Double Filet Crochet

Double Filet crochet is two inter woven layers of filet or net crochet in contrasting colours.

The two layers are independent--no stitches connect the two except at the final edges-- but they are offset so that the crossovers of one coincide with the holes of the other, and their arms cross at right- angles; it is the choice of which arm to bring to the front at each crossing creates the pattern and the weave.

Double Filet crochet is usually worked in a medium yarn {DK} using trebles and chains [it requires a thicker hook than is normal for the yarn]. It lends itself especially to Afghans and blankets and to outer garments such as jackets, ponchos, hats and scarves. Two colours have given way to many, and surface diagonals have been added to the horizontals and verticals inherent in the net.

Inspiration for designs has ranged from the Lindisfarne Gospels and book of Kells to a mosque in Samarkand, wall painting in Zimbabwe and mathematic puzzles.
